Saltalamacchia’s RBI Double After Tex’s Error Burns Yanks

A rare Mark Teixeira error spoiled a brilliant relief effort by Bartolo Colon as Boston picked up its first victory of the season on Friday against New York in their home opener at Fenway Park.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia stroked a two-out double in the fifth inning off Colon to score Kevin Youkilis with the tie-breaking run after Teixeira’s error on a sure double-play grounder by David Ortiz was the difference.
John Lackey (1-1) was the winning pitcher despite the fact the Yankees collected six runs on seven hits and two walks in five innings off the veteran right-hander. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Colon (0-1) was the hard-luck loser. Yankee starter Phil Hughes gave up six runs on seven hits and two walks in two innings.
The Yankees’ season record falls to 4-3 and the Red Sox are now 1-6.
  • Colon’s performance may put him in line to replace Hughes in the starting rotation if he continues to struggle. Colon gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk and he fanned five in 4 1/3 innings.
  • Alex Rodriguez connected for his third home run for the season, a solo shot in the top of the fifth off John Lackey to tie the game at 6-6 and take Hughes off the hook for the loss. Rodriguez now has 616 career home runs.
  • Brett Gardner proved to be a very pesky leadoff hitter for the Yankees. He drew two walks, doubled, tripled, stole a base, scored two runs and drove in another. Gardner pulled his batting average up to .238.
  • Robinson Cano, who is the career batting average leader for opposing players who have at least 50 at-bats at Fenway Park, added to that total with two doubles in four at-bats. He also drove in two runs.
  • Hughes is obviously struggling with a lack of velocity and command. He was bashed for six hits and five runs in the second inning as the Red Sox moved out to a 6-3 lead. After two outings Hughes’ ERA is 16.50.
  • Boone Logan is quickly punching his ticket back to Triple-A. The Yankees’ lone lefty came in to a 7-6 game to face some tough lefties and promptly gave up a double to David Ortiz and a two-run single to J.D. Drew. In three appearances, Logan has given up five hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings.
  • Teixeira had a rough afternoon at the Fens besides the rare error. He also was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. His average dipped to .240.
  • Jorge Posada also took an 0-for-4 and he is now 0 for his last 14 trips to the plate with five strikeouts. His average has dipped to .154.
The weekend series in Boston continues on Saturday. The Yankees will start 24-year-old right-hander Ivan Nova (1-0, 4.50 ERA), who is coming off a solid performance against the Twins in which he pitched six innings and gave up three runs. Last season he faced the Red Sox once and gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings.
The Red Sox will counter with Clay Buchholz (0-1, 5.78 ERA). Bucchholz is coming off a game in which he was blasted for four solo home runs by the Texas Rangers. In five career starts against the Yankees, he is 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA.
Game-time will be 1:10 p.m. EDT and the game will be telecast nationally by FOX Sports.
